Spring is here, and that means it’s time for the annual Friends of the Library Book Sale! This is your chance to get some serious bargains on books, audiobooks, DVDs, CDs, and even magazines. I’m not kidding – these prices are ridiculous!

Just how ridiculous are the prices?

Each item is only .50, or get a whole box for $5. (We provide the box.)

Where do we get the items for the annual sale?

They may be discarded library materials or donations from various sources. Items are discarded for several reasons. We strive to offer the most up-to-date collections for our patrons at all times. If a book has not checked out for a while, it may be discarded to make room for a new book. Perhaps an item has checked out so many times that it needs to be replaced with a new copy, so the old item goes to the sale. Sometimes we buy extra copies of a book by a popular author, but don’t need as many copies after a while. The extra copies go to the sale. Some materials are in less-than-new condition but still very usable so-you guessed it–they go to the sale. We also receive many generous donations from private collections, and they can be added to the sale if in good condition.

Where do we hold the sale?

The annual Friends of the Library Book Sale is held in the Main Library Annex, 146 South Paint Street (behind the Main Library). We have so many items that we use our largest room, plus the hallway to display everything.

Where do the proceeds from the sale go?

The Friends of the Library organization supports library programming for children and adults, among other library projects. They also provide some of the “extras,” like the “First Library Card” bags for kids and Bookworm Summer Reading t-shirts for staff members. If you would like to join the Friends of the Library, ask any staff member for information.

What are the days/hours for the sale?

We will kick off with a members-only preview night from 3 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 5. You can purchase a membership at the door for a small fee, or stop by one of our nine library locations in advance to become a Friends of the Library member.

The rest of the sale days are open to the public:

  • 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday, April 6
  • 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, April 7
  • 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, April 8
  • 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, April 9

We are looking forward to seeing lots of familiar and new faces this year. The success of this sale contributes to keeping our libraries strong, and gives you the opportunity to purchase books and other items at unbelievable prices. See you at the sale!
