Beyond Books

Library After Dark

Originally published in the Chillicothe Gazette, October 13, 2019.

As fall finally rolls in, the library is preparing for its annual Library After Dark program at Main. On the last Friday in October we will turn the second and third floor of the library into a haunted house…or more specifically this year, a creepy carnival. It takes a lot of work and planning for an event that’s only open for an hour and some people may wonder, why is the library putting on a haunted house, what does that have to do with books or literacy?

Just as libraries are about more than books, library programs are about more than reading. Our programs are one way that we share opportunities for our patrons to explore their interests and connect with other people in the community. We work to provide experiences that may not be available nearby, or that may be financially unavailable to some. From cooking classes to game nights, art shows to penguin visits, fandoms to paint nights, the things you like to do are at the library.

The first program many people think of when they think of kids’ programs at the library is storytime, which we offer several times a week across the county. But, it’s so much more than that. We offer STEAM programs, gaming clubs, and activities that hide basic life skills mixed in with fun. We strive to offer something for everyone and bring in performers and presenters that will make you laugh as well as learn. We want kids to know that the library is a fun and safe place where they can be themselves.

For adults, book clubs come to mind of course, but we’ve branched out there, too. Libraries are a place where people can get together for a variety of reasons, without the pressure of having to buy anything. Our goal is to be the place where you find not only the information, but also the connections you’re looking for. You can read the latest about our adult programming by subscribing to our newsletter at https://www.crcpl.org/newsletter. And, if you have a great idea for a program, we want to hear about them.
