“I’m bored,” was my childhood catchphrase, often said with different whines and groans for emphasis. My grandmother had no sympathy and threatened dusting or dishes until I learned to use my imagination for entertainment. Studies show that boredom is good for our brains. It boosts creativity and can even supercharge problem solving but being on the adult-end of my children’s whines and groans makes me dread the summer lull.

Fortunately, we live in Ross County and the Bookworm summer reading program at the library will pack our days with prize earning potential and LOTS of programming. This year marks 68 years of Bookworm at the library. The Youth and Adult Services have created a calendar of childhood dreams.

Pre-registration begins Monday, May 16th but, things officially kickoff with a massive party at the Northside Library on Wednesday, June 8th from 5-6:30pm. All branches will be represented, hosting crafts and activities on the lawn.  Did I mention face painting? Who doesn’t want to start their summer with a full-face of washable whiskers?

This summer, kiddos will create Undersea Perler Bead figures (which is super relaxing), enroll in our Dive Training, and catch Encanto and The Little Mermaid on the big screen. The Kids-Make-It series allows them to block code robots, craft cool stuff with 3-D pens, and create the waffle of their dreams. Want to get rich? “How to Make Bank” is designed to get your teens and preteens on the road to financial success. Escape at story time, dance in the sun as Molly takes Music Time outdoors, party like a mermaid, paint as a family, celebrate Percy Jackson, and be amazed at an interactive juggling show! Even teenagers will be hard-pressed to find fault with the bi-monthly Breakfast Club hang-out where they’re invited to sample breakfast food and watch “Saturday morning” cartoons in their pjs!

Adults, sign yourself up as a reader and you’ll earn prizes of your own, finish and you’ll be entered for a chance to win a Nintendo Switch! Whether it’s the latest thriller or a picture book to your little ones, it all counts! Check out the family friendly Summer Music Series, virtual cooking classes, author visit, and more!

As if all this wasn’t enough, the finale party caps off what is sure to be a Summer to remember. Mark your calendars for Wednesday, July 27th at 6pm because the Bolmer Shelter in Yoctangee park will be filled with trophies, hot dogs, snow cones, and library staff celebrating all our readers! Cool down with a private swim party for all Bookworm guests!

We’ll also draw our winners for a Duplo Prize Pack and two other Nintendo Switch Lites!

You can find the FULL list of incredible offerings on our calendar (yes, there is more), which is available through the event tab on our website at www.crcpl.org, or listed in our catalogs available for pickup at any location.

With all these amazing offerings, plus actual reading, I dare anyone to be bored!
